Louisa's Grandchildren

Louisa's family has intrigued me for I do not know how long. I was employed at a nursing home in 1975 a block away from the 15th Ward chapel on 8th West. I recall my grandfather Backman referring to it in relation to the Evans family. Later I would learn more about the other sisters and their families but the Evans family stayed in my mind. When I began this project, it was the Evans family that provided me the impetus to record and share my research. Recall my first post.
Joseph Pollard Evans had three children, all born Salt Lake.
Joseph Leon Evans born 15 November 1899, died 4 August 1949 in Los Angeles, California. I find no record of marriage. Joseph Leon apparently moved with his mother and sister to the Los Angeles after his father passed away in San Francisco.I have found no biographical material for him.
Shure Dale Evans was born 26 June 1903 and died just short of a year later on 2 June 1904, he is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery with his grandparents.
Emilie Frances Evans born 25 March 1905 married in Salt Lake City July 1927 to William Henry Balfour with whom she had one child Leona. Mother and daughter were enumerated with Joseph Pollard and Frances Olson Evans on the 1930 census. Emilie E. Balfour passed away in Los Angeles 13 October 1976. I have found no record of William Balfour's death.

Clarence Ira Blanchard the next grandchild, son of Mary Alice Evans. His obituary states he was chief clerk, Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Co. He was born 16 Jan 1898 in Salt Lake and passed away 25 August 1975 in that city. He had married Myrtle Josephine Krogh in November 1922. They had no children. Clarence is credited with helping bring pro baseball to Salt Lake City with the Pacific Coast Bees. Myrtle's death date, per Social Security Death Index, was July 1987.

Glen Robert Sharrock Evans, son of Robert Taylor Evans, July 1906 to March 1975, married May LaVon Magee in 1926. They later divorced, but had one child: Darlene. I believe Darlene was adopted by May LaVon's second husband. Glen then married Phyllis Emma Avery in 1931, and had 5 children, who all survived him: Glenna Von Hollenbeck, Barbara Neuenschwander, Janice Christensen, Layne Evans, and Valene Evans.

Arthur L Schefski, son of Louie May Evans was with us March 1903 to February 1904, taken by bronchopneumonia. Three siblings completed this family:
Melba Schefski Rigney 10 Feb 1905 - 4 May 1993, married Emmett Rigney 1923 and had one daughter, Diane Thomas. Melba worked as bookkeeper in her father's automotive business as well as her husband's grocery and soda fountain. Her obituary says she was an avid reader and a member of bridge and poker clubs. She was grandmother of two. Emmett passed away in 1980.
Ethel May Schefski Barrus Archibald 2 March 1908 - 17 May 1975, married first Martin Barrus and then Reese T. Archibald. An employee of Vogue Cleaners, Ethel was mother of two: Valerie Peterson and Barbara Bradshaw. Reese preceded her in death in Apr 1974.
Kenneth Earl Schefski 17 June 1914 - 28 July 1994, cited as a respected member of the Salt Lake business community, first with Schefski's Garage and then Independent Auto Damage Appraisers. He was active in civic groups and business associations. In 1936 he married Connie DeWaal who passed away 1968. He married again in 1972 Marjorie McKinley Nugent. Kenneth was survived by four children: Ken, Karen, Connie and Carolyn. At the time of his passing he had eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Marjorie passed away in 2004.

The remaining grandchildren of Louisa Pollard Evans are the children of Grace Evans Baysinger.
Mildred Lee B. Busk, 27 Jan 1909 to 15 Mar 2010 passed away in Bountiful, Utah. Death came through natural causes, after a life of 101 years. Due to her husband, John N. Busk's work as supervisor with Betchel Construction Co. she moved to many different states as well as Australia. Active in community and church, Mildred sang in numerous church choirs. She was known for her handwork, knitting, tatting, quilting, embroidery and crochet. At her death she was survived by her three children: Beverly Newson, Jan Whitmer and John Busk, 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. John Busk passed away in 1969. Native to Sevier County, Mildred and John are buried in Richfield, Utah.
Doris B. Asay, 26 April 1915 to 11 March 2008, described in her obituary as a very elegant lady, passed away in Orem, Utah. Her husband of 63 years Boyd E. Asay passed away in 2005. Doris was active in her community, which she loved. She served in church positions in Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society. She served a mission at the Provo LDS Temple with her husband. She also worked for the Alpine School District for 25 years. At her passing she left three daughters: Connie Rae Carter, Linda Lee Hobbs and Jacqueline Riley. Also 11 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.

The Photograph

I finally got the photograph into the blog on the 3d try -or so. I believe I have all the faces identified correctly:
seated (L-R) Louisa Evans, Mary Ann Pollard, Joseph Pollard, Mary Ann Allred, Grace Backman
standing (L-R) Elizabeth Boud, Lovenia Holding, Lydia Puzey, Alice Johnson
It is the two standing center I am not absolutely certain of. I am trying to make my identifications by what I perceive as older/younger. I believe the photo of Louisa Evans in "Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude" is cropped from this photo. Please correct my conclusions if you see I am in error.

In this morning's Salt Lake Tribune I read the obituary of Nad Puzey. It suggests he died in Spring City, he will be buried there on Saturday September 17. Particulars can be read at www.rasmussenmortuary.com

Long a resident of Riverton (and that area of the Salt Lake valley) he returned to Spring City when he retired. "God's country", he is quoted. Lola Jane's Last Two Children

Cora Virginia Justesen married Fergus Theodore Thompsen 28 Dec 1931 in Manti, Utah. I do not have the marriage having been performed in the Manti LDS Temple in my record. Cora married Walter David Hook 18 Dec 1935, and this couple also had a son Donald P. Hook. Cora died 21 Dec 1998 at Reseda, Los Angeles, California, where I learn from Social Security Death Index that Walter also died there in May of 2011. They have two grandchildren in my record.
Fergus Thompsen passed away in St George Utah in 1986.

I have located WWII Army Enlistment information for Fergus Thompsen which indicates he was a shipping or postal clerk at the time of his enlistment in 1943. I have not yet learned anything more of Walter Hook.
