Clarence Jay Allred born at Chester in Sanpete county on February 19, 1900 passed away February 9, 1969. He had served as Executive Secretary of the Utah State Roads Commission. With his wife Thelma Myrtle Carter, 1907-1956, he had three daughters: Colleen A. Holbrook, Joyce A. Olson Dowden and Carolyn A. Smith. Clarence Jay and Myrtle are buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery. After Myrtle's death Clarence married Evelyn Neff (1907-1997) in 1957. Evelyn was an elementary school teacher, she and Clarence did not have any children. She also is buried in Salt Lake City Cem. Two of Clarence's daughters have passed away. I have identified 11 grandchildren.

Alice Genile Allred Prestwich, 15 Dec 1907 - 21 Feb 2004, died at her home in Salt Lake City. Her obituary in the Salt Lake Tribune portrays a full rich life. She taught in the Spring City public schools and also worked with the Utah State driver license bureau. She was an avid genealogist. She married William Berg Prestwich June 27, 1934 at the Manti LDS Temple. They were predeceased by two infant sons, and Berg followed his wife in 2009, passing away at 100 years of age. They are survived by son Larry Prestwich (wife Anne) and daughter Connie Brinton (husband W. Robert) as well as 11 grandchildren.

James Raymond Allred, 12 Aug 1910 to 28 Nov 1980 was married to Melba Miller in 22 Nov 1940 at the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Mary Anne's Family, continued

I learn a little bit more of Lola Juanita Backman Peterson's family from the book The Gottfredson Line (FHL us/can 929.273 G713gr). Her husband, Arthur Marion Peterson was born in Circleville, Utah. Also of Utah pioneer stock he served an LDS mission in the Western States Mission and this was where he and Lola met. They married in the Manti LDS Temple 1917. I have listed her children.

Grandchildren through James Carlos Allred and Ruth Anine Justessen are Clarence Jay Allred (1900-1969), Merrill Allred (b & d 1904), Alice Geniel A. Prestwich (1907-2004), James Raymond Allred (1910-1980) and Erma A. Barton (1916- 1985). I have recorded sixteen children from these 5 (great grandchildren to Mary Anne.)

By Lola Jane Allred and John Franklin Justessen Mary Anne has eight grand children: Elizabeth Cleo J. Burquist Millerschoen (1896-1961), Edith Fern J. Anderson (1898-1987), Sarah Maxine J. Peterson (1901- 1965), Mary Hazel J. Robinson (1903-1985), Inez Ophelia J. Monson (1904-1990), John Evans Justessen (1908-1938), Cora Virginia J. Thompsen Hook (1911- ), Lola Winona J. Allred (1913-2005). I have record of 15 children of these 8 grandchildren of Mary Anne.

Joseph Delos Allred had one child before his untimely death: Stephen Terrance Allred (1898-1982). Stephen's mother did remarry, her second husband Joseph Henry Puzey also a descendent of Joseph Pollard. We will meet that family later. Stephen Terrence Allred and his wife Ruth Elma Jorgenssen had three children.

Martha Amelia Allred Anderson had seven children: Beulah Amelia A. Neill (1898-1971), James Clair Anderson (1900- ), Vernon Hazen Anderson (1903-1964), Alton Boyd Anderson (1905-1965), Alma Owen Anderson (1909-1987), Eva Mauarine A. Buma (1913- ), anad Mary Marjorie A. Snyder Foxe (1918-). These seven grandchildren of Mary Anne had nine children that I have identified.

John Arthur Allred, Mary Anne's youngest child was the father of four, Arthur Allred (1910), LaFerne Allred (1916), and CLyde Allred (1917) deceased at or shortly after birth. His surviving child, Elva Ramola A. Fechser (1913-1982) and her husband James Rogers Fechser were parents of five.

Grandchildren of Mary Ann Pollard Allred

I was fortunate to get to Spring City for the Heritage Days events a few weeks ago. Among the homes I ventured out to see was that of James A Allred and his wives, of whom Mary Ann was the last surviving. Southwest of the Spring City LDS Meetinghouse, within a block of the Allred Schoolhouse and the granary, I tried to imagine the scenes of our subjects time. Difficult, except that I could see how there was much open space and much farm work to be done.
By her six children May Ann had twenty-six grandchildren. The first, Lola Juanita Backman was born 1892 in Salt Lake City, daughter of Mary Ophelia Allred and George Seigfried Backman.
Lola married Arthur Marion Peterson. Both passed away in California, she in 1977 and he in 1981. They were parents to seven children: Ophelia Orlean, Virginia Beth, Melba Anne, Donald Arthur, George Russell, Lola Caroline and James Reid. I do not have death dates for Melba Ann P. Swensen or James Reid Peterson. Their siblings Ophelia LaMont died 2009 in Los Angeles, Virginia Mangeris passed away in Berthoud, Colorado in 1997; Donald died as a child and George died in 2003 in Greensburg, Washington. Lola King passed in 1981 at Mar Vista, California. I have identified sixteen grandchildren for Lola Backman Peterson.

Along Colateral Lines

While I have been looking into the Australian relations I thought I would check again with the other Pollard siblings. James Pollard and Elizabeth Thrasher had a number of children baptised in the Corfe Castle parish church. The eldest was Sarah who married Peter Williams, a stone layer born in Steynton or Stainton, Pembrokeshire, Wales. They were married by banns in the Corfe Castle parish church December 1826. I have identified four children but have found little of any adult-aged records as marriage or death/burial.
James (bap 1813), William and Elizabeth (bap 1816) were born between Sarah and Joseph of our story and I cannot account for their having reached adulthood. Two others James (1806) and Fanny (1811) died the years they were born.
THE BISHOP'S DAUGHTERS
I believe I will begin the next generation's -the Daughters' grandchildren- in a descendency format: Mary Ann's grandchildren, then Louisa's etc.

Passages

In the Deseret News, Saturday April 16 we learned of Bessey Christensen Puzey's passing. She died in Richfield, Utah. She is the wife of Willard R Puzey whom she married in 1941- June coming would have been 70 years! This alone would make them remarkable and exemplary,if any doubt exists. Along with Willard, Bessey is also survived by their children Byron and Sandy Puzey, Vickie and Bill Lemmon, and Jimmie and Jeannie Puzey; a foster daughter, 19 grandchildren and 51-plus great grandchildren. Internment will be Spring City Cemetery April 18 following services in Richfield.
Willard Reid Puzey, a son of Albert E. Puzey is grandson to Lydia Pollard Puzey. We hold him and his family in high and sympathetic regard.

Collateral Lines

Years ago I had a chance to look at -in my own hands- a funeral notice for George Pollard, brother to Joseph Pollard.
This photographic item was produced in Melbourne Australia if my memory serves. And with that I knew that Joseph had maintained some sort of contact with his family of England. This month, on the 4th I received a note from a descendant of George Pollard who had settled in Australia.

When I looked in my files I found only dates: George Pollard born either 24 or 28 Jun 1824 at Corfe and died 1915. Nothing more. Because the funeral momento had a picture either with others in it or named on it I knew George had a family but I have no record. So it was that I delighted in receiving a note from someone who had chanced upon this blog. And with this contact perhaps we will learn a little of what became of Pollard siblings. (My record, probably based on the LDS Archive records has Joseph with 8 siblings, George the youngest, 5 years younger than Joseph.)
As I learn more about this brother in Australia and perhaps of the others I will bring that information to this site.

I have added a picture sent me by Kaitlyn Emmett. This is not the funeral card. Kaitlyn is the great great granddaughter of George's daughter Elizabeth Ann.

Passages

In August I rushed to finish the report of a generation before going on to another activity. This family has had much to reflect on- for me, at least- since then. These members have passed away: Thomas Van Latta, husband of the late Lynda Glade Latta (daughter of Lucile Backman Glade) on February 18; Mildred Jensen Puzey, wife of the late Charles Beck Puzey (son of Albert Puzey)on February 14. Mildred, is being honored today at services in Wales, Utah and in Spring City where she will be buried.
We lost Jan Kirkham Duncan on October 10 when she had a tragic fall while hiking in her beloved Big Timber, Montana mountains and we lost her, and my brother J Rex Kirkham the 9th of this month when he lost his battle with cancer in New Mexico. My personal knowledge of these last two and what I have learned of the former confirm my admiration and pride in the heritage we have, the legacy we can leave.
I have not had the determination to sit at this project again for a little while. It is the realization that there are many in the Bishop's Daughters' families I have not found and/or met. And I want as much now as before to offer a snapshot of what we have in common once I do.
